Today is Global Handwashing Day, which reminds us of the importance of remaining hygienic. The 15th of October was marked as Global Handwashing Day by the UNICEF in 2008. Since then the day is celebrated annually all over the world.
In 2008, Sachin Tendulkar, the maestro of Cricket, announced the day as Global Handwashing Day by encouraging kids to wash their hands after every meal. A video was also launched in which Sachin Tendulkar was shown washing hands with soap at the Mohali Cricket ground.
Since the announcement of Global Handwashing day, efforts were made by the eminent personalities to encourage kids to wash their hands after and before having their meals and after coming from washroom. In 2009, Kaiji Moriyama a Japanese dancer held a dance show over the tunes of a melodramatic song which was aimed at encouraging kids to promote hygiene.
Washing hands is essential for healthy living as it protects them from the germs which may cause stomach or other infections. There are a number of NGO’s which are working towards spreading the awareness regarding benefits of keeping one’s hands clean. There are several tiny germs in the atmosphere which are not visible from our naked eyes.
These germs often are carried to our stomach through our hands when we touch or eat meal without washing our hands. Therefore, washing hands with soap prevents these germs from entering into our body. Parents and school authorities can play vital role in encouraging kids to wash their hands thoroughly.
