The stadium that has had more name changes than Puff Daddy is about to begin the hunt for a new one. Sun Life Financial, the Canadian insurance company, has announced it will roll back its operation in the United States and as a result likely won’t renew its deal for naming rights on Sun Life Stadium.
Sun Life still has three more years on its $7.5 million contract with the Dolphins, so the name will be around for a little while longer. But the Miami Herald reports the team will soon begin looking for a new naming sponsor. The hunt comes at the same time the Marlins are trying to land a corporate naming sugar daddy for their new stadium as well.
The new name would be the eighth for the 24-year-old stadium. It’s previously been dubbed Joe Robbie Stadium, Pro Player Park, Pro Player Stadium, Dolphins Stadium, Dolphin Stadium, and Land Shark Stadium.
Pro Player, the sports apparel division of Fruit of the Loom, was the first corporate sponsor to buy naming rights. Pro Player was liquidated in 2001, though the name stuck around until 2005.
So this is the second time the stadium’s naming sponsor has dealt with business failure while its name was on the venue. Maybe there’s some sort of curse? Well, unfortunately, Land Shark beer continues to be sold.
