For every fashion magazine, the September issue is usually the biggest and the best of the year, so for celebrities, snagging the cover of a glossy’s September issue is a huge deal.
WWD just released a list of which superstars will cover what magazine, and it seems that this year, the major titles are sticking with reliable bestsellers who have all-American sex appeal and relatability.
Jennifer Lawrence, who was previously seen on W in October, Vogue U.K. in November and Vanity Fair in February, scored her first cover of Vogue, shot by famed photographer Mario Testino.
Vogue’s June cover girl, Kate Upton, who has also appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated, GQ and Cosmopolitan, will grace the cover of Elle in September.
Glamour chose to play it super safe with Jennifer Aniston, who consistently performs well at newsstands, as its September cover girl.
Lucky, which went through a bit of a rough patch last year, tapped beloved Blake Lively for its September issue.
Marie Claire is also playing it safe and returning to an old standby, Zooey Deschanel, who was its second-best seller of 2012.
Meanwhile, Cosmopolitan is also turning to a TV star for its biggest issue of the year. The glossy cast Nina Dobrev of “Vampire Diaries.”
Allure and Town & Country both surprised us with unexpected cover girls. Allure went with Jennifer Garner, who’s been missing from the newsstands for quite some time now, and Town & Country chose Lauren Bush Lauren and Claire Courtin-Clarins for an issue focused on philanthropy.
Then there’s Lily Collins and Rooney Mara – two young actresses who have started to land more magazine covers. Collins will cover Seventeen, and Mara will front T: The New York Times Style Magazine.
No word yet on who will cover InStyle, Vanity Fair and Harper’s Bazaar.
What do you think of this year’s September issue cover girls?
