Rent the Runway now offers plus sizes

Rent the Runway has finally brought plus-size designer dresses to its online designer dress rental site.

The New York Business Journal reports that Rent the Runway’s “RTR Plus” collection includes over 40 styles from five designers available in sizes 14 to 22. Added to existing plus-size contributions from Kay Unger and Adrianna are designs from Badgley Mischka, Carmen Marc Valvo and Theia, who created dresses exclusively for Rent the Runway.

Prices to rent the dresses range from $50 to $200 and the available plus-size dresses range from classic LBDs to sequined cocktail dresses to floor-length evening gowns.

“Every woman deserves to feel beautiful before the most important occasions in her life and every woman regardless of her size should have her choice of the designer dress that gives her the most self-confidence,” Chief Executive Jennifer Hyman said in a statement.

“We are so proud that our business has grown enough that we are finally able to make designer fashion not only accessible to, but also inclusive of, women of all shapes and sizes.”

Hyman said that she founded Rent the Runway so every woman could have a “Cinderella moment,” but because of the lack of plus-sizes, that until now the mission has been “inauthentic,” Fashionista writes.

Hyman said she was “literally laughed out of the room” when she first launched the company and asked designers for sizes 0 through 22. But over time, she accrued enough influence to pressure designers to offer plus-size options.

“I spent years learning the rules of the industry so I could break them,” she said.

“Until now, we have only been able to follow through on this undertaking for virtually half of the female population,” she said.

“We are so proud that our business has grown enough that we are finally able to make designer fashion not only accessible to, but also inclusive of, women of all shapes and sizes.”

And they’re not done yet – Hyman said that she’ll keep fighting until plus size women have as many options on the site as straight size women do.
