Oscar-nominated actress takes role as the Princess of Wales in movie biopic
Oscar-nominated actress Naomi Watts has been confirmed to play the late Princess Diana in a film biopic.
The movie will track the last two years of the Princess’s life as she transforms into a “major international campaigner and humanitarian”. The movie will be directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel (‘Downfall’) and produced by Ecosse Films.
Naomi Watts’ previous film credits include ‘King Kong’, ‘Mulholland Drive’, ‘The Ring’ and this year’s Oscar snub ‘J. Edgar’.
Jessica Chastain was initially linked to the coveted role, but was shunned in favour of Watts.
Speaking of her newly announced casting, Watts said; “It is such an honour to be able to play this iconic role – Princess Diana was loved across the world, and I look forward to rising to the challenge of playing her on screen.”
Director Hirschbiegel added: “I am delighted to have such a truly exceptional actress who embodies the warmth, humanity and empathy of such a global icon as Princess Diana.”
Another Princess Diana biopic from producer Stephen Evans is reportedly in the works with Charlize Theron or Carey Mulligan favourite to fill the lead role and ‘Star Wars’ actor Ewan McGregor looking to scoop the part of the Princess’s bodyguard Ken Wharfe.
