Since its first edition in 1984, the mission of Miami International Film Festival (MIFF) has been to bridge cultural understanding and encourage artistic development and excellence by provoking thought through film. By bringing the best of world cinema to Miami, MIFF presents the city and the film industry with a singular platform that fosters creative and technical talent.
The Festival continues to bring the finest in world cinema to South Florida, presenting a platform for independent filmmakers to showcase their work. The Festival has placed Miami at the forefront as one of the great metropolitan cities with a growing and booming arts community and has gained recognition in the industry with its consistently high quality programming and presentations from filmmakers, celebrities, and the film industry.
During its early years, the films were screened in a variety of local theaters in the greater Miami area, and by the sixth Festival in 1989, the Olympia Theater at the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts had become the official residence. Through its history, the festival’s management changed hands several times before finally finding its home with Miami-Dade College in 2003. Today, the college hosts this 10-day comprehensive and globally recognized event, boasting a yearly attendance of over 70,000 film lovers, critics, and industry figure heads.
