Fashion Trend: Denim Skirts Make a Comeback

Denim skirts have never really been considered fashion-forward. That seems to be changing, however, thanks to several designers electing to send manifestations down recent runways and brands including select pieces in lavish lookbooks. Many celebs have already embraced the trend, sporting denim skirts in varying lengths.

Claudia Schiffer certainly seems to be having a love affair with her long, button-front Stella McCartney Spring 2010 skirt. She actually was caught in the retro style two days in a row late last month in London. The first day saw the supermodel, who just launched her own knitwear collection, pairing the skirt with a light blue button-up shirt before switching to a peach blouse, printed scarf, and a Salvatore Ferragamo Spring 2011 saddle bag for the following day. Denim wasn’t the only piece doing a double take with Claudia opting to wear tan ankle strap sandals both days.

Reese Witherspoon went mini in a flared denim skirt partnered with a black crew neck while out and about recently in Beverly Hills. Joy Bryant, meanwhile, opted for flash at the launch party for the ELLE Spa out in Miami Beach earlier in June. She combined a sequin short-sleeved top with a frayed denim mini and cross-body bag.

Model and activist Lauren Bush was up on this trend all the way back in March, though. She filmed an interview for the TV show Extra in a floaty belted skirt, white tank, and her philanthropic FEED bag. Another celeb who had an early start embracing denim skirts was Kate Bosworth. The actress was caught in mid-April exiting Byron & Tracey salon in Beverly Hills donning a faded version with an Isabel Marant Spring 2011 knitted sweater and Marti bag by Alexander Wang. Isabel Marant Dicker boots and Celine shades finished off her spring look.

Kate’s skirt actually looks an awful lot like one from Mulberry’s Resort 2011 lookbook. The brand has a few denim pieces scattered throughout the collection, including dresses and shirts. Lighter shades prevail with denim skirts showcased as perfect for layering with everything from tees to trenches to cardigans. This renaissance of the denim skirt will most likely continue into fall with fashion houses like Chloé offering A-line selections for the Autumn/Winter 2011-2012 season. The French label even sent denim down the Parisian runway this March.
