In reviews of the End Times tour, Marilyn Manson appears to be winning the battle of 90s rock-star egos, and losing the war. The Fort Lauderdale-spawned Manson has been Manson, clad in black leather and an unholier-than-thou sneer, while Billy Corgan has pushed substance over minimalist style. The contrast between the pomp and bombast of Manson and the crystalline clarity of the Smashing Pumpkins could not have been starker, noted a reviewer for Rolling Stone. The show marked the premiere of a new lineup for the Smashing Pumpkins, featuring original drummer Jimmy Chamberlin and bass player Jack Bates, son of Joy Division and New Order’s Peter Hook  but the group played with the tightness of a time-tested unit.
