“It’s a Cinderella story that gets turned on its head, a satire about breaking down class and emotional barriers, and a confrontation between New World callousness and Old World humanity.” – Derek Adams, Time Out
The awkward Sabrina (Audrey Hepburn) leaves home for a year in Paris, where she turns into a sophisticated, charming young woman. Upon returning home, she’s merely a chauffeur’s daughter — until one of the brothers her father works for takes notice. Of course, the handsome playboy brother (William Holden) is more fun, but could the serious, older sibling (Humphrey Bogart) be the better match? Director Billy Wilder originally wanted Cary Grant for the Bogart role, but the hard boiled star of Casablanca did not disappoint playing against type in a romantic comedy. Sabrina was nominated for six Oscars, with Edith Head winning Best Costume Design for supervising gowns primarily designed by French couturier Givenchy, whose long association with Hepburn began with this charming, timeless entertainment.
