Stately and playful chamber music come to the fore in an afternoon dedicated to the Woodwind Fellows! Arthur Bird, an American composer who studied in Germany, channels his inner Mendelssohn and Schubert in his grand Suite for Double Wind Quintet, where strict form meets sweeping sentiment. In a contemporary twist, piano takes on the traditional wind quintet in Wallingford Riegger’s contemplative yet spirited Concerto. Mozart, known for his individual wind concertos, combines their voices in his sweet Serenade. Known also as “Night Music,” its quintessential Viennese sound is born from its contrapuntal precision and unforgettable melodies.
