Paraíso, by writer-director León Ichaso, the acclaimed Cuban-American filmmaker whose credits include El Super and Bitter Sugar, comes to the Gables Cinema on Sunday, June 8 at 1:00 pm. A balsero (rafter) flees from Cuban dreams gone wrong and lands in a Miami of no return, where desperation to change his life leads this “new man” to commit despicable acts. A controversial and subversive taste of an imagined freedom, Paraíso explores generational and class divides within the Cuban exile community seldom addressed in cinema. This movie is part thriller, part drama, part existential romance that truly captures, through wonderful on-location shooting, the heart and soul and authentic flavor of Miami today.
