Music and comedy pair up in this hilarious musical tale of a mothers overprotective nature, and the ridiculous measures she will go to, to find the perfect wife for her son. Miami Dade Colleges (MDC) Department of Arts & Philosophy, Opera/Musical Theatre Ensemble is proud to present Once Upon a Mattress,Thursday, April 18 Saturday, April 20, at 7 p.m., at the Wolfson Campus Auditorium.
The story, a comedic tweaking of the fairy tale, The Princess and the Pea, centers on Queen Aggravain and her relentless pursuit to marry off her son, Prince Dauntless, to the perfect bride. In an effort to attain her goal, she declares no one may marry until her son ties the knot. Yet, in the process, she manages to sabotage every princess that comes along. When Sir Harry and Lady Larken learn that they are going to be parents, wed or not, he goes off to the swamps and brings back Princess Winnifred the Woebegone. The queen is horrified and immediately plots a scheme. Unfortunately for the Queen, Winnifred, with some help from Sir Harry, the King, and the Jester, isn’t going to be quite so easy to get rid of.
The MDC production, featuring students from the Wolfson Opera/Musical Theatre Ensemble, is directed by Amy Ibberson, director of vocal studies at Wolfson, musical direction by Dr. Alan Ngim, and choreography by Lee Pugh.
