James Conlon, Music Director of the Los Angeles Opera, returns to lead the NWS Fellows through the tumultuous journey of Mahler’s introduction to the symphonic world. Boldly emblazoned with both his youthful energy and a musical maturity beyond his years, the First Symphony is an expansive exposé on life itself with pastoral cries of nature, everyday melodies and a hauntingly distorted version of “Frère Jacques.” But like life, the Symphony remains in search of victory, one found in a gloriously jubilant, unforgettable finale.
