Homestead-Miami Speedway typically plays host to fast cars but on December 20-21, 2013, the speedway will be the location of the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency’s (DARPA) Robotic Challenge (DRC), a competition of robot systems and software teams vying to develop robots capable of assisting humans in responding to natural and man-made disasters. More than 16 teams will be tested on eight unique tests that will provide a baseline on the current state of robotics. Eight teams will be selected to receive DARPA funding throughout 2014 and have a chance to compete in the 2014 finals where a $2 million prize will be awarded to the winning team. The event is free and open to the public.
