Miami City Ballet proudly presents the American premiere of Richard Alston’s critically acclaimed Carmen. Performed in the tradition of a classical ballet, Carmen is a flamenco-fueled take on the timeless tale of Gypsy passion and fate as told by one of today’s most important choreographic voices.   The 18th-century hymns and egalitarian beliefs of the Shakers were Twyla Tharp’s inspiration for Sweet Fields – a joyous, ethereal celebration of innocence and simplicity.   George Balanchine’s dazzling Allegro Brillante is a testament to the beauty, strength and grace of the human spirit, set to a vigorous Tchaikovsky score. As Balanchine once said, “it contains everything I know about classical ballet in thirteen minutes.” Times Read: 0

Leave the chocolates and teddy bears at home and spend your Valentine’s Day with the Percussion Fellows for a tongue-in-cheek tribute to the mass-market holiday. In the aptly named Cheating, Lying, Stealing, David Lang rocks hard in this driving hit from his Bang on a Can days. Caroline Shaw employs flower pots in her quest to bottle the epic, grand and creepy in her successful Taxidermy, and jazz and rock battle it out in Hollinden’s imaginative Surface Tension. In a brief respite, Bryars’ transcendental homage to a founding father of percussion manufacturers is a meditative moment in an otherwise hard-rocking performance. Times Read: 0

Billy Elliot is a heartwarming story of an 11 year old English coal miner’s son who discovers a passion for dance. This displeases and embarrasses his family. He perseveres with his natural talent and struggles to realize his dream. Billy Elliot is a beautiful story that crosses gender stereotypes and will leave the audience feeling uplifted and optimistic. The film was recreated into an award winning Broadway musical. Variety says the film, “strikes a delicate balance of comedy and pathos with an uplifting final act that delivers a resoundingly satisfying emotional payoff.” Billy Elliot continues our series of family and youth films, Family Day on Aragon, on Saturday & Sunday, February 14 and 15 at 11:00 am. The film is appropriate for ages 7 and up but contains strong language throughout. Family Day on Aragon is in partnership with Books & Books and the Coral Gables Museum. Times Read: 0

Legendary baritone Thomas Hampson is an international celebrity with a career that includes more than 150 recordings, Grammy awards, multiple operatic appearances at The Metropolitan Opera, and musical outreach activities across the globe. Hear him in an intimate vocal recital before he joins the New World Symphony and MTT for The Wound-Dresser, John Adams’ mournful setting of Walt Whitman’s poem. The graphic, Civil War-set ode vividly comes to life in what Adams calls “a statement about human compassion of the kind that is acted out on a daily basis, quietly and unobtrusively and unselfishly and unfailingly.” Times Read: 0
