The Great Grove Bed Race, held annually in November, is a way for speed seekers to hit the streets on four wheels at full speed, only they’ll have to trade in their hot rods for a different mode of transportation – beds. Stop thinking of a bed as a sleepy place and let your inner racer take over.
Teams of five build homemade beds and push them down the streets of beautiful, historic Coconut Grove in a race to the finish line. If you think it sounds silly and a little crazy, that’s because it is. It gets even crazier; in 2011 Vanilla Ice was the Grand Marshall of the event.
Get a team together, decide on a theme and costumes and build a bed that can earn you some serious street-cred. Do it to build some team spirit, bond in a new way with your family, or just do something out of the ordinary.
Attendees are guaranteed a unique experience.
This year race happens at November 8th, 2014 on the pavement in Coconut Grove. It will be a race of real beds mounted-on-wheels, tough-pushing racers, stunning costumes and celebrity street–credibility.
The festival of live music, first appearance of local craft beer brewer Concrete Beach, entertaining race beds and visual hilarity features over 40 racing teams raising money and awareness for Little Smiles of Florida: a charity that provides anything from toys to electronics, special event tickets and VIP outings to help kids escape their unfortunate circumstances of being sick in the hospital, even if only for a short period of time. “We are thrilled to have been selected as this years cause,” said Executive Director Josh Daniels.
The festival is five dollars at the door, kids 12 and under are free. A celebrity with local ties to the Miami community will serve as Grand Marshal. Previous Grand Marshals have included Flo Rida, Helio Castroneves (3-time Indy 500 Champion and winner of ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars”), Tony Kanaan (2004 IndyCar Champion) and Vanilla Ice. A family pajama party race track and interactive area, pit row of racers and live music, food, local craft beer garden and food vendors will pave the way to the race track. The way the race works is like any other 5k or triathlon for charity; the Bed Racers will fundraise all fall with a 5-man race team sending emails and encouraging attendees to sponsor and donate to their team.
Sponsors include: Debtwarriors.com, Clear Channel Communications, Sapient Nitro, K1 Speed, Concrete Beach Brewery, Miami Parking Authority, The City of Miami, Community Newspapers, Little Smiles of Florida, and Keurig Green Mountain Coffee.
