Phil Collins will perform at Art Basel Gala Fundraiser

Phil Collins an English musician, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, actor and writer. He gained fame as both drummer and lead vocalist for the rock group Genesis, and he gained worldwide fame as a solo artist. Collins is one of the most successful songwriters and performers of all time, singing the lead vocals on dozens of hit albums and singles in the United Kingdom and the United States between 1976 and 2010, either as a solo artist or with Genesis. His solo singles, sometimes dealing with lost love and often featuring his distinctive gated reverb drum sound, ranged from the atmospheric “In the Air Tonight”, dance-rock of “Sussudio”, piano-driven power ballad “Against All Odds”, to the political and religious connotations of “Another Day in Paradise”. AllMusic has described Collins as “one of the most successful pop and adult contemporary singers of the ’80s and beyond”.

Is there a more underrated rock legend than Phil Collins? The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer’s body of work – both solo and with his former band, Genesis – stands up to most acts in music history, and yet his name rarely enters the discussion of all-time great artists.

Maybe it’s his humble demeanor, or his tendency to avoid the spotlight, or the fact that he looks more like an accountant than a swaggering rock star. But considering his accomplishments, Collins has always flown as far below the radar as anyone.

A surprisingly powerful yet controlled singer, Collins is also a great drummer, coming in at No. 22 on Rolling Stone’s all-time list (who could forget his thunderous riff in the anthemic “In the Air Tonight”?). And he’s one of only three recording artists to have sold more than 100 million albums worldwide both with a band and separately as a solo act.

The other two? Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson.

Collins is also a philanthropist, having established in 2000 with ex wife Orianne the nonprofit organization Little Dreams Foundation, which benefits underprivileged, talented children.

On Dec. 6 at the Fillmore Miami Beach, Collins will come out of retirement to perform at a Gala Fundraiser for Little Dreams. It’s his only concert this year, and his first in nearly four years.

It’s difficult to speculate what songs Collins might choose to perform, but here’s a partial list of hits you might hear: With Genesis – “Follow You Follow Me,” “Turn It On Again,” “Misunderstanding,” “Mama,” “That’s All,” “Invisible Touch,” “Throwing It All Away” and “Tonight, Tonight, Tonight.” Solo – “In the Air Tonight,” “I Missed Again,” “You Can’t Hurry Love,”  “I Don’t Care Anymore,” “Against All Odds,” “Easy Lover,” “Sussudio,” “One More Night,” “Take Me Home,” “A Groovy Kind of Love,” “You’ll Be in My Heart” and “Another Day in Paradise.”

This show holds global appeal beyond Collins’ rare appearance: Also on the bill are Grammy-winning Italian singer Laura Pausini, the Hispanic “Queen of Rock” Alejandra Guzman, the Little Dreams Band and more special guests TBA.
